I am going to start on methotrexate 15mg injections next Monday and i wondered who else is having them? Also how easy are they as i understand that they are in a pre filled syringe. I don't like the thought of seeing the needle!
I'm also on enbrel injections but as they are in a pen injection you don't see the needle and i don't mind those.
I'm getting quite nervous and wonder if i will be able to inject them.
Can anyone reassure me please?!!
Love Shirley x

Hi Shirley I ve been on injections for a couple of months now and found that they have worked better than the tablets I inject on my thigh, I give the spot a good rub with my hand first and quickly pop it in and it doesn t hurt, and alternate each leg. Hope all goes well for you, Julia xx

I was on these for a few months before Christmas and I was scared too. The first one with the nurse was hard and she timed me. It took 11 minutes for me to pluck up the courage. The second one took 3 seconds! After that I found it a breeze. I did them in the roll of fat in my tummy below the belly button whilst sitting down. I figured that there was nothing but fat there so the needle couldn't hit anything else. I can honestly say mine only made a tiny little sting as they went in. It became so routine for me that it didn't bother me one bit after the first couple. I'm sure you will be fine as I am quite a nervous patient and do not like needles. I felt really proud of myself for 'achieving' this and hope you will too. Good luck and best wishes from Naomi.

hi, i am on 25mg mtx inj and like you i was a bit iffy to do myself and yes it is a prefill syringe which looks scary, but after the first one i felt ok with it,i used to inj my late husband with insulin and called him a baby about it but its different when it is on yourself, rightly so it stings a very small bit but if rubbed as said its fine,im not keen on needles but they are so fine you hardly feel it,i do mine while the news is on a.m as i have an excuse to shout at the same time,,i do tummy too,the pills didnt agree with me either, good luck you can do it,deep breath and go for it,dorothy.

Thank you for the replies. I do feel a little bit assured now and i know i have to give it a go. I just keep thinking about that needle! I can't have an increase in dosage orally as i had liver failure 20 months ago, caused by leflunomide and the consultant thinks i will get more benefit from an injection. I also get a sore mouth and feeling of being sick.
I will probably try in the tummy as i've plenty of fat there and i do my enbrel injection there as well.
I will let you know how it goes!

Shirley
I have used both pre-filled syringes and needles and would opt for the needles every time. They are so thin you do not feel them go in and you do not get the shock of the pre-filled syringe.
It took me many minutes to pluck up the courage the first time I used a needle and I felt so embarassed in front of the nurse that I was being such a wuss. I was even more embarassed when I realised how easy it was but she loved the great big smile which broke out on my face when I did do it.
I did try the injectable Methotrexate but found it too potent for me and have gone back onto the tablets.
Good luck and take care
Jackie xx

Hi Everyone. I hope you have all had a good and pain free weekend. I have just got back from the hospital after having my first methotrexate injection and as you all told me, it was fine!! No pain at all and the rheumy practioner said i done well and i would manage fine next time, so all that worry for nothing! I have to start on a statin though because of my cholestrol. Is anyone else on a statin? Love Shirley x

Hi Shirley So pleased the injection went well, so often we imagine these things are going to be worse than they are. I have been on statins for about three years now and have not had any problems with them. Take care Sue

Shirley, I am so pleased it went well. I can remember feeling relieved after the first one too. The first one you do yourself at home will naturally be a bit of a challenge but you will soon get used to it and eventually it should be a breeze! It's amazing what we can achieve when we have to put our minds to it isn't it? I would never have thought that I could do an injection with ease but I can. Well done you for getting through today OK and good luck for the next one. Best wishes from Naomi.

Thank you all, you are all so kind. I do feel kind of proud of myself though!
I was really tired yesterday afternoon and woke in the night feeling really sick but wasn't, is that normal? I felt sick with the tablets dueing the evening after having those but not in the night.

Well done Shirley! That sounds like a normal reaction to the mtx, sometimes after the tablets I feel as if I've taken sleeping tablets instead! And as far as I know ,the injections can make you feel sick but this usually wears off when you get used to them. Hope the injections help you.

Hi all, Glad to hear so many possitive comments. I get my first delivery of mtx inj next week. The nuse from health care at home is coming to show me how to do it. Can't say I'm looking forward to it, but knowing that it 's not going to be too much of an ordeal, certainly helps! Zena x.

Just thought that i would give you an update. I have now been on the MTX injections for 4 weeks now and doing well.
I'm still a bit nervous of sticking that needle in my tum but i take a deep breath and just do it! It's fine, doesn't hurt at all. In fact i find it stings less than the enbrel pen injection.
Zena, i hope you are doing okay also. Let us know how you are getting on with the MTX injections.

Hi Shirley, I'm doing fine thankyou, did my second jab this morning. I agree, much less painful than Enbrel. I find all the paraphalia that goes with it more worrying than the actual inj now, spillage kit, gloves, plastic aprons etc. makes you wonder what we are putting into our bodies. Don't use the gloves, can't seem to manage to get them on and off, and how do you do your tum wearing an apron? Zena x.
